An alternative to jump rings could be wrapping a contrasting colored thread around those bits. When I lived in Guatemala, they would do this with my hair (I was the only blonde person around, so they wanted to show that through the colored thread)

Very simple necklace made using easy-to-find materials; embroidery thread and jump rings. I think the result looks very fashionable and summery!
